EL PASO, Texas — Accomplished personal injury attorney James D. Tawney, partner at Tawney, Acosta & Chaparro Injury Law (TAC Injury Law), has been named a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), one of the most distinguished honors a trial attorney can receive. This invitation-only national association recognizes exceptional trial lawyers who have demonstrated the highest standards of professionalism, civility, and trial experience.

“This is a tremendous honor and a career milestone,” said Tawney. “I am humbled to join a community of attorneys who are as committed as I am to protecting the right to trial by jury and upholding the values of fairness and professionalism in the courtroom.”

Founded in 1958, ABOTA is committed to preserving the Seventh Amendment right to civil jury trials and elevating the ethical and technical standards of legal advocacy. Membership is a rare distinction, limited to fewer than 8,000 attorneys and judges nationwide, and is equally balanced between plaintiff and defense attorneys. To be considered, candidates must have at least five years of active trial experience and must have tried a minimum of seven civil jury trials to verdict.

A highly respected figure in the legal community, Tawney is licensed to practice in both the State Bar of Texas and State Bar of New Mexico, as well as in multiple federal jurisdictions including the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas, the District of New Mexico, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.

Throughout his career, Tawney has earned numerous accolades for excellence in advocacy and client service, including:

  • Membership in the Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum
  • Recognition over multiple years on the Texas Super Lawyers and Rising Star lists and Southwest Super Lawyers and Rising Star lists by Super Lawyers
  • Inclusion in The National Trial Lawyers: Top 40 Under 40
  • Honors such as El Paso Times Best of the Border “Best Law Firm”Better Business Bureau of El Paso Customer Service AwardBest of the City Bronze Award by El Paso Magazine, and Albuquerque Business First “40 Under Forty” Award

He is the second partner at TAC Injury Law to be accepted into this prestigious legal organization and joins Alejandro Acosta, III, who became a member in October 2021.

Tawney is now part of a growing network of ABOTA members who work to promote civic education, judicial independence, and the integrity of the legal system. As part of the organization, he will contribute to national and local chapter efforts to educate the public, support the judiciary, and advocate for the preservation of trial by jury.

This year, at total of 54 members from across the U.S. were accepted to the national board. Of those, Tawney is one of only five Hispanic members and the only El Paso attorney selected. The El Paso chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates has 38 members total. The Texas Chapter of ABOTA (TEX-ABOTA) has more than 1,300 members, which includes the El Paso chapter.
