
Michael Gomez, associate attorney, is an accomplished and committed attorney who brings more than a decade of experience in high-stakes civil, criminal, and mental health litigation to Tawney, Acosta & Chaparro where he advocates for injury victims across Texas and New Mexico.
A member of the State Bar of Texas and licensed to practice in the Texas Western and Eastern District Federal Courts as well as the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, Michael has built a career centered on public service, legal excellence, and leadership in the courtroom and the community. He is an accomplished trial and appellate litigator and has successfully tried and defended verdicts all the way up to the State's highest court. Michael’s appellate work includes precedent-shaping advocacy and influential legal positions that have shaped State law.
As a seasoned Assistant County Attorney, Michael has served in several leadership roles, including Division Chief of the Civil and Mental Health Litigation Unit for the El Paso County Attorney’s Office, where he oversaw the Civil and Mental Health Litigation Units. In this role he managed complex dockets, mentored trial attorneys, oversaw day-to-day legal operations, and developed litigation strategies that produced successful outcomes in all aspects of trial.
Throughout his career, Michael has handled challenging litigation across a broad legal spectrum, including mental health, civil rights, criminal prosecution, deceptive business practices, and family violence. He has led high-impact civil and criminal cases at both the trial and appellate levels in state and federal courts, earning a reputation for his strategic thinking, persuasive advocacy, and deep understanding of legal systems. In his role as Trial Team Chief for the Mental Health Litigation Unit for the El Paso County Attorney’s Office, he implemented forward-thinking procedures that improved outcomes for clients and ensured compliance with evolving legislation. His work has not only impacted individual cases but has shaped institutional policy and contributed to local, state and nationwide legal training on mental health initiatives.
Beyond the courtroom, Michael is a trusted leader in the El Paso legal community and a champion for justice and advocacy. He has testified before the Texas Senate as a subject matter expert on legal reforms impacting public safety and the justice system. Michael’s contributions have played a meaningful role in advancing policies that protect some of the state's most underserved populations. In addition, Michael’s recognized subject matter expertise has led to speaking engagements at numerous seminars and symposiums across local, state, and national platforms where he has addressed audiences of judges, attorneys, law enforcement officers, and healthcare professionals alike.
Michael has also served as a board member and legal consultant for organizations such as NAMI El Paso and the Advocacy Center for the Children of El Paso, where he helped support vulnerable individuals including victims of abuse and individuals living with mental illness.
