El Paso, Texas – A multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 West near mile marker 26, close to the Cielo Vista Mall area, left one person dead and several others injured. The El Paso Police Department reported that the collision involved about five vehicles and forced the closure of the westbound lanes while emergency crews responded.

How the Crash Happened

Investigators said a Chevy Malibu driven by 74-year-old Sergio Miguel Gomez left a nearby parking lot. The vehicle failed to stop and crossed multiple lanes of Gateway West. It then jumped the center median and entered I-10 West, where it struck multiple vehicles.

Gomez’s passenger, a 56-year-old woman, suffered injuries and responders transported her to a hospital. A Subaru Crosstrek with two Heartland, Texas residents also got hit. Both occupants suffered minor injuries. A third Subaru driver did not report any injuries.

Authorities later confirmed Gomez died from his injuries on March 26. Officials also noted this crash marks the 11th traffic-related death in El Paso so far this year.

The El Paso Police Department continues to investigate the incident.
