New Mexico State Police have released additional information about a tragic two-vehicle crash that occurred Wednesday morning, September 24, near milepost 198 on U.S. Highway 380. The accident, which happened close to the Chaves and Lea County line about 45 miles east of Roswell, claimed the life of a 19-year-old man.

According to NMSP Officer Wilson Silver, the incident took place around 9:40 a.m. when a 2017 Ford passenger vehicle traveling eastbound unexpectedly crossed into the westbound lane. The vehicle then collided head-on with a Freightliner commercial truck. The circumstances leading to the Ford’s lane departure remain under investigation.

Authorities continue to look into what caused the crash, and no further information about additional injuries or contributing factors has been released at this time. The area near Caprock, NM, remained closed temporarily as officials worked to clear the roadway and gather evidence.

This heartbreaking collision underscores the dangers of rural highway travel and the importance of remaining vigilant while behind the wheel. As investigators work to uncover the details, families and community members are left mourning this devastating loss.
