Accidents in Texas, In the News

El Paso, Texas (November 1, 2026): A head-on crash in San Elizario killed a 54-year-old woman Sunday morning. The crash happened in the 11900 block of Socorro Road. Lydia Burrola, the driver of a pickup truck, died at the scene. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said no one else went to the hospital.

Driver Faces Intoxication Manslaughter Charge

Deputies charged Daniel Martinez, 61, with intoxication manslaughter. According to an arrest affidavit, Martinez was driving east on Socorro Road. Documents say he swerved between lanes and drove off the road. He then allegedly crossed into the westbound lanes and hit the pickup head-on.

Deputies reported a strong odor of alcohol as they helped him out of his vehicle. Martinez allegedly told them he drank four or five beers at a get-together in Juarez. He also said he “probably fell asleep” before the crash. A breath test showed a 0.105 BAC, above the legal limit of 0.08. Deputies booked him into the El Paso County Detention Facility on a $150,000 bond. A court has not yet ruled on the charge.

Sheriff Urges Drivers to Plan a Sober Ride

Sheriff Oscar Ugarte said, “Our hearts are with Ms. Burrola’s family as they face this devastating loss.” He urged drivers to arrange a sober ride before they drink. Special Traffic Investigators continue to look into the cause of the crash.
