New Mexico – A powerful dust storm swept through Chaves County, New Mexico, on Monday, March 4, 2025, leading to hazardous driving conditions and multiple crashes, including a 21-car pileup. The Chaves County Sheriff’s Office reported that several accidents occurred due to near-zero visibility, with injuries confirmed.

Southbound Highway 285 and various county roads were temporarily shut down as authorities responded to the scene. Undersheriff Charles Yslas stated that all available law enforcement resources were deployed to assist. NOAA satellite imagery captured the massive dust plumes driven by strong southwest winds, and the National Weather Service issued a Dust Storm Warning in response.

Wind gusts reached up to 77 mph at the Roswell Air Center, contributing to the dangerous conditions. The warning remained in effect until Monday evening, with forecasts predicting the dust and strong winds would subside after sunset. Authorities have yet to release further details regarding the total number of crashes or the extent of injuries.
